“Previously, I was thinking that running and passing the ball are the only important skills in playing football . It turns out that there are many other skills, strategies or details that must be understood well by a football player, " said Edgard.
"Now I can play more simply, with on target short passes. It is not always necessary to display individual skills to get past the opponent. That knowledge is very important for me in order to become a good professional footballer in the future, "added Edgard.
Apart from technical factors, the experience of competing against the best European academy teams in England and Italy were also the very important experiences where he could learn many valuable lessons. According to Edgard, each team had different strengths and he could find out a number of strategies and skills on how to face different opposing teams.
“It's a rare opportunity to be able to see up close how the academy teams play in England and Italy. They had different qualities so the way to deal with them should be also different from one team to another team. When we faced Italian teams in Season Two, besides having to face their strong physique, I also learned how to face players whose style of playing was to display a lot of individual skills and who had extraordinary understanding on football tactics. Whereas against the English team, I had to face tall and big players with great speed," added Edgard.
"The point is we have to be confident and don't feel inferior. We should always follow the coach's instructions and try to perform as best as we can in every match. Evidently, we were able to face the opponents well, such as against Juventus or Crystal Palace, " said Edgard.
Edgard also feels that the #GarudaSelect Program is really beneficial for young players to be ready to face various challenges. "With more and more Indonesian young players joining this program, the quality of our players in the future can increase rapidly. This is really a valuable experience, so whoever will participate in the following seasons, they must maximize this rare opportunity to get as many knowledge and skills as possible, ”Edgar concluded.
